Self-Defence Gear & Training Essentials for Beginners (Coimbatore)
I’m Coach Belbin. You don’t need a shopping list to start self‑defence training. Start simple, stay safe, and add gear as your training progresses. Here’s exactly what I recommend to beginners.
For the full training framework, read the Complete Guide to Self‑Defence Training in Coimbatore.
Day‑one essentials
- Comfortable clothes you can move in (t‑shirt, shorts/leggings)
- Water bottle and small towel
- Hair tie if needed
First add‑ons (when you begin partner drills)
- Hand wraps (protect wrists/knuckles during pad work)
- Training gloves (10–14 oz for pad/bag work)
- Mouthguard (for partner drills and light contact)
Protective gear as you progress
- Shin guards (for low‑kick practice and defense)
- Optional elbow pads (for specific drill blocks)
- Rashguard/shorts (better hygiene and comfort for grappling)
How to choose (coach’s notes)
- Fit over fancy: gear should stay in place without you adjusting it every round
- Breathability matters: you’ll train more consistently when you’re comfortable
- Hygiene: wash wraps/mouthguard after each session; wipe down gloves; air dry gear

Budget tips
- Start with wraps + mouthguard; borrow gym gloves before buying
